Nigeria is becoming diversified in the areas of sports, the sports federation is incorporating some sports such as rugby football which are not primarily played in the country, promoting and developing them as well.
Rugby is a type of a type of football sports which is also known as a team sports rugby union and rugby league. It was believed that the rugby football started at rugby school in Rugby, Warwickshire and rugby league started in Huddersfield, West Yorkshire after their separation to develop the Northern Rugby football union in 1895, which is now known as the Rugby football league. The rugby football game is a game that can be played with two teams and comprises of fifteen players each.
The sports of Rugby football was believed to have originated from the manner of football played at the Rugby school in England. In 1823, a pupil at Rugby school; William Webb Ellis, disobeyed the rules of the game that says that the ball can only be passed forward but carried the ball and run with it in a game, then producing another way on how the rugby football game can be handled.
Rugby football came into existence in Nigeria through the British Empire. The Nigeria Rugby football was known to be dominated by the white settlers and expatriates for so many years. Rugby football in Nigeria is a small sport that is still under development. It was ranked 75th by the International Rugby Board.
The Nigeria national rugby team represents Nigeria in the sport of rugby union, there are Rugby football teams which are being controlled and governed by the Nigeria Rugby Federation.
The various teams under the Rugby football are as follows Cowrie Rugby football club of Lagos, Nigeria Police Rugby 7s team in Lagos, Sharks Rugby football club, Kaduna Rugby football club which was known as the home of rugby union in Northern Nigeria, Barewa rugby club of Kano, Racing rugby football club in Lagos, Delta Dragon Rugby football club, Royal Stallions Rugby football club and others.
The clubs participate and represent Nigeria Rugby football in both local and international competitions.
